ACIP Technical Assistance and Support

ACIP Development is a review of the improvement process which includes examining academic and cultural data to write goals, objectives, strategies and activities that will bring improvement for the students and school. ACIP teams receive quality time to reflect upon their current plan to determine strengths and weaknesses that help develop a new and improved plan. Teachers are provided one –on-one support to develop each step of the plan.

ACT Student Prep: Writing and the ACT

Enhanced Writing and the ACT: On September 12, 2015, the ACT writing test changed from an argumentative writing essay to a more analytical argumentative essay. Is there a difference? Definitely, this session reviews in depth, the new types of prompts (three perspectives), the correlation between the prompt and the ACCRS standards and the process need to achieve the best outcome. Teachers, as well as students in grades 9-12, will benefit from learning the changes on the writing portion of the ACT.

Best Practices Lesson Planning

Participants will review the components of a Best Practices Lesson Plan. A variety of lesson plan templates, as well as, completed lesson plans will be provided. Participants will develop a Best Practices Lesson Plan for their grade and/or core area. The Coaching Cycle assists with planning lessons and incorporating literacy in Physical Education and Elective classes. This is based on the content area pacing guide. Special Education and Inclusion Coaching Cycles include providing strategies to assist with classroom management and class design. Coaching Cycles: Modeling

Two- to four-day modeling is provided using the components of the Coaching Cycle. Planning and instruction is dependent upon the number of days scheduled for the Coaching Cycle. Teachers receive individual coaching which includes modeling a standards based lesson with explicit instruction. The next step is to plan a strategic lesson that is standards based and data driven. Last, the teacher and coach reflect on the lesson and the next step is established. By the last day debriefing includes how to continue to improve student performance.

Many skills taught are too complex to be measured effectively with multiple-choice questions. Teachers are provided with an overview of constructed response questioning and engage in activities to evaluate the format and development of constructed response items. Analysis of student samples provides practice in evaluating student work to determine varying amounts of credit using rubrics.

Constructed Response: Modeling Constructed Response in the Classroom

Modeling Constructed Response in the Classroom provides explicit instruction, practice, and evaluation of constructed response items. Constructed Response items are modeled in the classroom to allow students to observe procedures for justifying, explaining, and creating responses that incorporate information to receive full credit for the response. Students are provided practice opportunities to develop constructed responses and determine the information needed to receive full credit through the use of a rubric. Students critique constructed response samples to determine varying degrees of credit and determine added information needed to receive full credit.

Where’s the rigor? Teachers are engaged in activities to “up the rigor” in their classrooms. Pacing Guides Grades K-12

This includes facilitating a team of teachers in developing a year-long sequenced guide for instruction of a content area. It is a process that can be applied to any curricular area and grade level using the Alabama College and Career Readiness Standards for the subject area. Grade levels taking high stakes assessments may use test data to determine areas of weakness and pace accordingly. The pacing guide is created by teachers to use as a guide for instruction, student practice and assessments. It is a time management tool and a way to clarify instructional goals. It allows the standards to be sequenced in a logical and progressive manner. Teachers are encouraged to add resources and vocabulary throughout the year and the information collected is used to revise the pacing guide for the next year.

Positive Behavior Support

This training focuses on how to set up a framework of proactive and preventive behavior support rather than reactive in school systems. The Nuts & Bolts of RtI

Are you where you need to be after the 2010-2011 mandates to implement Response to Instruction? This PD is a “must have” for administrators and Problem Solving Teams. The session will guide you through RtI requirements and mandates that assist in keeping your schools compliant. Resources include a bulleted guide that will be beneficial as you navigate the components and requirements, along with actual Problem Solving Team videos for Tier I, Tier II and Tier III team meetings, as well as sample forms, both required and optional that you may customize to your system.

Unwrapping (Unpacking) Standards

“Unpacking the Standards” is a professional development workshop that will familiarize teachers with the Alabama Course of Study in Mathematics and English Language Arts. This workshop is necessary because of the implementation of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Alabama which is based on Common Core. The workshop reviews the basics of the course of study such as the components of a standard, state specific standards and the anchor standards. The depth of the workshop comes from breaking down the standard by looking at the verbs and nouns in the standard and what the student is expected to attain upon mastery of the standard. The professional development also addresses Webb’s Depth of Knowledge and how the standards can be matched to the knowledge level as indicated by the chart.Teachers leave the workshop with a better working knowledge of the 2013 Alabama Course of Study standards.

Utilizing Formative Data to Inform Instruction

Participants will learn how to access formative and interim assessment data and analyze the data to uncover and identify skills mastered and not mastered. The group will dig deeper into the data to identify common student misconceptions and errors. Teachers will use reports to identify small groups of students who have missed the same skill(s). They will then work collaboratively to create short, high-impact lessons to remediate identified learning gaps. To conclude, participants will design new, short burst assessments to ensure students have mastered the targeted skill(s).

Vertical Teaming

The participants learn about the importance of vertical teaming and the steps needed to put vertical teaming in place. There will be examples of what these teams could accomplish and they will learn about the experiences of other systems in their efforts to create vertical teaming. The participants work in teams to identify the five priority standards to master before entering a grade/course. Then they work in teams to identify the five priority standards to master when they exit a grade/course. Participants collaborate to come to a consensus on the priority standards. Collaborative discussions determine how their specific content standards impact the next grade level.

Using the DOK model, teachers learn how to incorporate writing and literacy standards in daily lessons. Teachers see how writing develops from pre-writing to stories written by upper elementary. Technical issues and concerns raised by teachers will be individually addressed by the coach to ensure an effective delivery of instruction for the model lesson and planning day.

A cadre of teachers will observe an educational coach model a lesson to students. The resources, students and technologies available in the classroom will be used with the students. Teachers will observe the lesson noting specific “watch fors” to be discussed after the model lesson. Teachers will meet with an educational coach to develop individual lessons they will deliver to their students. The coach will provide guidance and just-in-time training for teachers in developing their lesson and ensuring it aligns to their standards.

Each teacher in a cadre will receive support from an educational coach through side-by-side teaching of a collaboratively prepared lesson. Once the lesson is delivered, a reflection of successes and areas for improvement will be discussed for future lesson development.
