Apps to Use Inside our LMS: Music

January 17, 2015

Teachers use music in a variety of ways in the classroom: to help teach vocabulary and grammar, to accompany the study of poetry, as a writing prompt, or to represent themes, feelings, or time periods discussed in literature. To help, there are music apps inside our LMS. Here are four popular music apps that you can embed into PowerSchool Learning: Spotify, 8tracks, Grooveshark and SoundCloud.

What is Spotify?

From their site: “There are millions of tracks on Spotify. So whether you’re working out, partying or relaxing, the right music is always at your fingertips. Choose what you want to listen to, or let Spotify surprise you.”

In Haiku: Embed an adorable Spotify widget for any song, album, or artist right into a Haiku Learning class.

Why should I try Spotify?

Whether it’s mood music, documentation for a music or history class, or just sharing your favorite tunes with your class, Spotify has a huge inventory, list of genres, and is up-to-date on the current hits.

What is 8Tracks?

From their site: “8tracks is the best place for people who care about music to make and discover refreshingly human playlists…Listeners can search for a mix by artist or genre, stream it in a legal, radio-style manner, and follow others who make compelling mixes.”

In Haiku: Embed any of 8tracks’ music-love-curated playlists as a cute little widget in Haiku. Hit the play button to play the tracks in order and get more info.

Why should I try 8tracks?

If you feel like playing DJ, 8tracks is a way to pull together just the right playlist for that project, era, or time of year.

What is Grooveshark?

From their site:”Grooveshark is free music, online radio, and so much more. Enjoy unlimited free music streaming with a worldwide community of artists and music lovers.”

In Haiku: Customize your embed by height, width, and theme, then embed a tiny audio play button.

Why should I try Grooveshark?

It’s simple, clean, and plays the song you want without any extra distractions.

What is SoundCloud?

From their site: “SoundCloud is the world’s leading social sound platform where anyone can create sounds and share them everywhere. Recording and uploading sounds to SoundCloud lets people easily share them privately with their friends or publicly to blogs, sites, and social networks.

In Haiku: Use the Share option to embed any sound from the SoundCloud. Everything embeds beautifully: the avatar for the song, the play button, and a stream of the ongoing comments placed at mile-markers throughout the song.

Why should I try SoundCloud?

I see this as a wonderful way to comment on moments in a piece, encourage composers to post and receive feedback, and explore alternate interpretations of any piece out there.

How do I embed these apps into Haiku Learning?

All of these apps can be integrated using our Embed the Web tool in Haiku Learning, whether you are using the Teacher Edition or School Edition. Watch this video to learn how to embed these apps into your Haiku Learning class today!
