Positive Reinforcement Drives Student Achievement

Today, results were released of a year-long study that explores the impact of positive behavior supports in the classroom. After hearing so many anecdotal stories about the success of Learning Earnings in classrooms and schools, we partnered with Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) to formally measure how effective a positive reinforcement program could be in improving three critical student achievement indicators: truancy, discipline infractions, and failing grades. The results were incredible. Simply put, positive behavior reinforcement solutions work when implemented with fidelity.

Integrated Positive Behavior Reinforcement

At the beginning of the 2014-15 academic year, the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) partnered with us to implement Learning Earnings across eight of the state’s school districts serving more than 30,000 students. Over the course of the academic year, schools using Learning Earnings achieved the following: increased attendance, increased learning gains, fewer discipline infractions, and significant achievement gains among sub groups.

Our study is the first of its kind to track such a large sample of students using a positive reinforcement solution over the course of an academic year. Based on the results, it is clear that a complete program like Learning Earnings helps districts target student achievement from the district level all the way down to individual classrooms and students.

With so much attention around student achievement focused on the ‘what’ (the courses, the content, the teaching methods, the testing, etc.) it’s refreshing to see how critical benchmarks will improve simply by focusing on the ‘how’ – keeping students motivated, encouraging celebrations of accomplishments big and small, and bringing awareness to how individual and group behaviors may impact learning. Students using Learning Earnings took a greater responsibility for their actions and performance, and the results were improved attendance, fewer discipline incidents and higher grades – simple steps that delivered big rewards in student achievement.

Our latest white paper, “How Positive Behavior Reinforcement Impacts the K-12 Classroom“, provides an overview of the challenges that ALSDE faced prior to implementing Learning Earnings, and explores the process for rolling out the positive behavior reinforcement program throughout their schools.
